How to prevent fake listings on a marketplace platform

Nikola CerićFounder & CEO, Manage IT

User verification, moderation and community reports — the combination of measures that builds trust on a marketplace platform.

Trust is the basic currency of every marketplace — far more important than any individual platform feature. One fake or fraudulent listing that slips through unnoticed and harms a user can cost the platform's reputation far more than any individual sale brings in value.

Layers of protection working together

User verification at registration — confirming the email address and phone number as a minimum, and for companies' shop profiles, verification of business documents where needed.

Automatic rules recognising suspicious patterns — for example an unusually low price relative to the market, or text duplicated from another listing already flagged as problematic.

Community reports — users themselves report suspicious listings they notice, which effectively uses thousands of users' eyes as an extra control layer the system alone couldn't have.

Human moderation reviewing reported listings and, where needed, removing them or suspending the account of a user regularly violating the platform's rules.

Why the combination is key

No single measure is enough on its own — automatic rules catch only the obvious cases, community reports depend on someone noticing the problem, and human moderation alone can't keep up with thousands of new listings daily without the help of the first two layers.

The combination of all three layers keeps the platform relatively clean of fraud, without slowing down or complicating the experience for the vast majority of legitimate, honest users making up the platform's normal traffic.
